Russian Beetroot and Herring Salad (Shuba)

A traditional Russian appetizer combining layers of pickled herring, boiled vegetables, and a creamy mayonnaise dressing. This colorful dish is both flavorful and visually appealing.

Steps

1. Prepare all vegetables by boiling, peeling, and grating them separately. 2. Dice the pickled herring fillet into small pieces. 3. In a small serving dish, layer the ingredients starting with grated potato. 4. Add a thin layer of mayonnaise over the potato. 5. Next, add the diced herring evenly on top. 6. Spread the finely chopped onions over the herring. 7. Add the grated carrot as the next layer. 8. Spread another thin layer of mayonnaise. 9. Add the grated beetroot as the final vegetable layer. 10. Top with the grated boiled egg. 11. Finish with a final light spread of mayonnaise. 12. Season lightly with salt and pepper. 13. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
