Traditional Croque Madame with Gruyère and Artisan Ham

A classic French Croque Madame featuring artisanal ham layered between toasted bread, topped with melted Gruyère cheese and crowned with a perfectly fried egg. No sauces on top, allowing the rich flavors of cheese and ham to shine.

Steps

1. Preheat your oven's broiler. 2. Butter one side of each bread slice. 3. Place one slice, butter side down, on a baking tray. 4. Layer the artisanal ham on the bread. 5. Sprinkle half the grated Gruyère over the ham. 6. Top with the second slice of bread, butter side up. 7. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère on top of the sandwich. 8. Place the sandwich under the broiler until the cheese is melted and golden brown (about 3-5 minutes). 9. While the sandwich is broiling, heat a small frying pan with a little butter. 10. Crack the egg into the pan and fry it sunny-side up until the white is set but the yolk remains runny; season with salt and pepper. 11. Remove the sandwich from the oven and carefully place the fried egg on top. 12. Serve immediately.
